American Express inactivity closures — Gold, Platinum, and more
Amex often closes inactive accounts around 12–13 months but usually emails a warning first. How to stay ahead of it.
Amex usually warns you
Compared to Citi, American Express more often sends an email giving roughly 30–35 days to use the card before closure. That said, 'usually' is not 'always' — do not rely on the warning.
Fee cards still need activity
Paying a $695 Platinum or $250 Gold annual fee does not replace transaction activity. If you keep a fee card for lounge access or credits you are not fully using, you still need periodic posts.
Suggested cadence for Amex
Every 90–120 days matches Amex's typical window with margin. If you have multiple Amex cards in the drawer, stagger or automate so none slip past a year idle.
